Experience

Following an abortion last year, I was told I needed contraception lined up immediately afterwards. Having never used contraception before, I chose the Evra patch as I thought it was the least invasive and less worrisome than having to remember to take a pill. After the procedure, the clinic gave me 3 months' worth of patches, ie. pale flesh coloured square adhesive plasters to start using straight away. The concept is very user-friendly - one patch a week for 3 weeks, then a patch free week to have a period (and repeat every month). The patch can be applied to the upper arm, upper back, lower abdomen or thigh - somewhere it won't crease, chafe or fall off - but it was recommended to not put it in the same place each week. The patch is waterproof too, so showers, baths and swimming were not ruled out(!) And if for whatever reason the patch becomes unstuck, you just use another one until it's time to change it. This method would have been the perfect contraception for me, HOWEVER I started having terrible headaches and migraines. As the wait for an appointment with my GP was a few weeks, in the meantime I visited two different sexual health clinics for advice, like, was it a common side effect? Was it dangerous? Doctors at both clinics, plus my local GP all advised that headaches were a sign of sticky blood and could cause a stroke; all advised I change to a different sort of contraception, which is exactly what I did. I stopped using the patch exactly 2 months after starting it because of the side effects. It was a real shame because my periods were regular, less painful and lighter than before with little to no spotting. I changed to the implant, but that's another story.

Experience after taking

During the final patch free week, I had a period for a few days, and the headaches stopped. A week afterwards I had the implant put in. My next period arrived 4 weeks after my last one.
