Experience

The pro is that there are obviously no side effects with contraception that is just an app. I was comfortable trying this because I’m in my thirties and am a long-term relationship with someone who I plan to have children with in the not-too-distant future, and so while I’m not trying to get pregnant at the moment, a pregnancy wouldn’t be completely disastrous. But you’re essentially unprotected, so it relies on you abstaining or depending on the pull-out method (or using condoms) whenever you’re fertile. I found this manageable, although not ideal. It requires a lot of routine and discipline to measure your temperature every day, which I was able to manage on a normal week but not when I was travelling or during the pre-Christmas period when you’re drinking a lot (as hangovers and lie-ins mess with your readings). It’s also expensive. But for me the most annoying thing was that even when I measured my temperature consistently every day, and even with a pretty regular cycle, I only had a handful of “green” (ie infertile) days per month. So I was doing all this work and paying money for very little in the way of actual ability to have sex without worrying about pregnancy. In the end I stopped paying for the app and just use the “calendar method”, but having used the app for a year or so was helpful in giving me a much better idea of when in my cycle I’m likely to be ovulating.
