Experience

I tried the injection after being told I could not stay on the combined pill (Yasmin) due to having high blood pressure. I had friends who were on the injection and they found it okay so I was comfortable trying it. None of my friends had then come off the injection though!!! Once I started on the injection, I never had a proper period, just spotted very frequently which was annoying, it was never regular spotting either so would catch me off guard, no pain with it though. The longer I was on the injection, the more negative side effects I hate…weight gain was a big one, but the low mood and snappiness was horrendous! It drastically reduced my sex drive, and I mean literally no sex drive at all. After just over a year on the injection, the low moods / weight gain and lack of sex drive really got too much for me. I didn’t want my boyfriend anywhere near me and I hated feeling this way. Didn’t get pregnant while on it though so it works, but also didn’t want to have sex so it was a VERY effective form of birth control.

Experience after taking

First period after the injection: The pain and cramps were waking me up in the night for hours…I was having to sit hunched over on the loo in tears in the night because I just didn’t know what was happening to my body. I had to have time off work, I was taking strong pain killers and nothing was helping – genuinely thought I was going to have to go to hospital, my boyfriend didn’t know what to do with me…I didn’t either! I’ve never been in so much pain from periods. I told a friend who knew someone who was also coming off the injection and she was the same as me (pain wise). She said the pain she was experiencing was like child birth – I’ve not had kids so can’t comment on that but she’d had 2. It took a few months for my periods to be “normal” again, pain wise anyway. This is something that when I read about, a lot of women experienced and I just WISH the doctors would tell you about coming off the injection & the side effects it has.
