Experience

When I first got the implant, my periods became irregular and then stopped completely for over a year (best year ever!!). Then they started again and I thought the implant had stopped working so I got it changed, despite my nurse telling me that it couldn’t possibly have run out after 2 years. Now I’ve had my new one for a further 2 years and the periods have continued – they’re really irregular, often going on for 4 or 5 weeks at a time, but with 2 or 3 months between each one and they’re so much less painful than before I got the implant. It’s annoying to not be able to plan around my periods anymore but at least they’re light so don’t tend to cause chaos and leakage anymore. The only other side effects I’ve really had are slight headaches, tummy aches and back aches, and irritability. All in all I think it’s a great contraception; I haven’t got pregnant in the 4 years I’ve had it, I don’t have to remember to take a pill, and I no longer get the horrible vaginal discharge I got on the combined pill. And btw, having a rod in your arm doesn’t freak you out for very long! Thumbs up from me!
