Experience

I had an overall positive experience with the implant. After having the first implant fitted I had spotting for around 4-6 months, I then took a pill to stop the spotting for a few weeks and after that my periods stopped all together for the next 5 years! Although having no periods as a young adult was very freeing, looking back in hindsight I don’t think the implant was great for my mental health. Whilst I didn’t experience any PMS or cramps, my emotions seemed to flat line and my moods were at a constant low level. This could be down to personal experience and other factors influencing my mental health, but I have definitely noticed my cycle impacting my moods more (both positively and negatively) since having the implant removed, which I personally prefer. I didn’t explicitly gain weight, but my size did fluctuate a lot during the time I had the implant and felt difficult to control, as well as a definite increase in darker body hair, particularly on my face. But again, these could be down to personal experience and the fact that I was using the implant in my formative years between the ages of 16 and 21. Ultimately, the effectiveness of the implant and being terrified of getting pregnant outweighed these cons for me.

Experience after taking

I got the implant removed because I hadn’t had a partner in a long time and wanted to give my body a break from hormones as I was struggling with mental health. My period took around 2 months to return and was only light at first. I noticed my moods began to fluctuate more regularly due to my natural cycle, as opposed to being at a constant low level. I ended up getting the copper IUD fitted as emergency contraception a few weeks later, which then gave me very heavy periods but no hormonal side effects which I personally prefer.
