Experience

Getting the coil fitted was very uncomfortable but once it was in I only suffered cramps for a couple of days. I went for a check up with my doctor a few weeks later when she told me she couldn’t locate the strings so I would have to go for a scan to check the coil was in the right place. The scan confirmed that it was so I just carried on. After 2 months I started to get severe cystic acne (I always had fairly clear skin prior to this). I went back to my doctor but she told me to just wait while my hormones adjusted. After nearly 9 months of dreadful, painful acne I’d had enough and wanted it out! My doctor relented but when the nurse went to take it out, once more they couldn’t find it. I had recently been booked in for a colposcopy due to abnormal cells showing up on my smear test, so she told me to ask the doctor doing the colposcopy if it could be removed then. At the colposcopy the doctor really struggled to find it, I was in quite a bit of pain for 15 minutes while she tried. Eventually she managed to get it out but it left me bleeding (full flow period amount) for almost 3 weeks with pretty persistant cramping the whole time. Dialling 111 of course gave me no reassurance but luckily the bleeding eventually stopped. Since then (3 years) I still had problems with my skin but returning to the pill I was on previously (Yasmin) has helped somewhat. I know a lot of women have had great experiences with this coil but mine was a huge mistake.

Cystic acne continued for years after removing the coil. The removal during a colposcopy was very painful and I bled quite heavily for bearly 3 weeks.
