I’ve never had heavy periods, but with the Mirena coil my periods stopped completely. I’ve forgotten what it’s like to have periods tbh. I’ve not had children, I’m 45 years old, so was initially told the Mirena would probably not fit me. So initially had an old fashioned IUD coil, this was a bad move for me. I had terrible stomach cramps and heavier periods. I persevered for 12 months, but eventually moved to the Mirena. I’m now on my 2nd one, they get changed every 5 years. I found the original fitting to be ok, kind of like a smear test, not the nicest thing in the world but not the most horrendous either, uncomfortable but not painful. However the removal of the 1st coil after 5 years was another matter. I went on my own, which I won’t do next time. It wasn’t so much that it was painful, I think it was a bit but I can’t really remember. But I do remember I actually felt emotionally traumatised, I dong know how else to explain it, it was an odd sensation, I think it must have been hormonal in some way. Overall I cannot recommend the Mirena enough, and have done so to all of my friends. The 10 minutes of the horrible experience of the removal is well worth the 8 years to date without a single period!!
