I love my hormonal coil, I have summarized my opinion into 3 +ves and 1 -ve. 1st +ve: I have been completely 100% period-free for ~4 yrs. Unlike the copper coil which made my periods longer and heavier, the hormonal coil has completely stopped my periods. It wasn’t all plain sailing I have to admit – I went through about ~6 months of spotting and irregular periods after the initial implantation until they settled down to nothing. However for me that has been completely worth it for the no-hassle joy of never having to deal with them now :) 2nd +ve: No real hormonal Issues: a lot of women get put off my the word “hormonal”, however the hormone (progestin) only works locally – ie in your uterus, it doesn’t actually enter into your bloodstream – so I don’t feel like I have any of the hormone-related side-effects some women complain of when using the combined-pill, for example. 3rd +ve: No faff: I love not having to ever think or worry about my contraception, unlike the pill when I used to forget taking them and then have doubts over whether I was covered. The type of coil I have lasts for up to 10-yrs – so I literally never have to think about it, which has been great. 1 -ve: Painful implantation & removal: I wouldn’t say the process was “really painful” more “extremely uncomfortable”. The Dr advised me to take Ibruprofen and paracetamol an hr before my appointment and then take the rest of the day off work, which I did not do and later regretted. You feel very tender down there, for the rest of the day really; and although the procedure was relatively quick it wasn’t very “nice”. However I would say it totally worth it for the outcomes you get, I would totally do it all over again.
