I’ve had the Mirena coil for 3 years now and would (and do) continue to recommend friends to try it. It wasn’t painful to be put in (just a bit uncomfortable but it only took 5 minutes). The first 8-12 weeks showed a lot of change – I had a consistently heavy period, menstral cramps, hormone imbalance and overall it felt like a very long time. Once I stopped bleeding and my body got used to the hormones from the coil I could count on one hand how many full periods I’ve had since then. I do have a monthly “spotting” but the flow is so light I rarely even need a tampon, just a panty liner. I do still get PMS although not as bad as before the coil. I rarely get menstral cramps and haven’t seen or felt a difference in my weight or skin condition since being in the coil. It has “strings” that hang down from your uterus to your cervix. When I first had it put in these were a little long and my boyfriend said he could feel them during intercourse. This was easily fixed by visiting my GP and they simply snipped them shorter which again was a straightforward process. It wouldn’t deter me from the overall benefits of the coil. Overall I would recommend the coil, especially as I would always forget to take the pill! Once it is in, it’s in and just works. I think I’ve had a good experience of it so far for sure.
