I have only had the mirena for one month. This is the first time I’ve had a coil. I read the lowdown info and listened to the podcast which helped prepare me. I remembered to relax and knew what would happen. The doctor was lovely and put me at ease. I had to have an STI swab just before it was fitted. She used anaesthetic gel to numb my cervix. I found having my cervix held open painful but it wasn’t unbearable – it’s only for a few minutes. It’s a very strange feeling and hard to describe! But it wouldn’t put me off going again. I felt slightly faint for about ten minute after but the GP kept me lying down until I was ready, and they provided large sanitary towels in case of bleeding. I didn’t bleed but as they use gel, I did have a sudden gush of gel/fluid come down when I left the surgery so I’m glad I put one in my pants! I had some cramping that day, nothing that didn’t ease with ibuprofen. Over the past 4 weeks I’ve spotted continuously – most brown discharge rather than red blood. I’ve had some on-off light cramping, but not enough to disrupt daily activities. My mood has remained the same and I haven’t had any other negative side effects. The only issue for me is I have a new partner and I don’t feel comfortable having sex whilst spotting like this, and I don’t know how long it will last. But otherwise it’s great!
