The IUS is the best form of contraception I’ve tried. I have recommended it to 6 friends who have had one inserted too. I’d like to add my positive story here as people love to share ‘horror stories’ about health things and put others off! My friends and family had positive experiences too. I suggest looking into ‘hypnobirthing breathing’ (e.g. The Positive Birth Company on YouTube) which I did during insertion to stay calm. I made sure my muscles were floppy and relaxed (legs, pelvis) and focussed on the breathing. I had taken two ibuprofens beforehand. I was genuinely surprised at how straightforward and “almost painless” the insertion was. All I felt was a sharp scratch and then two period-like cramps. I asked if the doctor was sure it was over! I then felt very mild background cramps/fragile feeling for the rest of the day as if I was on my period, which was completely fine. I did have spotting / in-between period bleeding for a few months before my body settled and my period was much lighter than previously (almost gone). Choose a doctor you trust who inserts IUS and IUDs all day. My view is that the acne I experienced was due to stopping the contraceptive pill after 5 years of taking it, rather than inserting the coil (I have acneic skin genetically). I think this is the case for many who stop the pill to get the coil and then think the coil is causing their acne/weight issues etc. All in all, I really recommend it!
