I have had the Mirena coil in now for just over 8 months, and I have had my period for every single day since, so I’m getting it removed next week. You are often warned that your periods will be “all over the place” for at least six months after insertion, but for me it’s now become counterproductive, as it’s more difficult to be sexually active when you have a constant, heavy period. Ironically, apart from this side effect, I’ve quite liked it. Apart from some painful but short-lived womb cramps near the beginning, I didn’t find insertion too traumatic, and the pain stopped soon after. I chose the Mirena as a localised hormonal type of contraception so that it wouldn’t affect my mood, and it hasn’t. My body weight hasn’t changed either and that’s a big relief. I would add though that it has definitely negatively affected my sex drive. Not everyone gets these side effects, and other than that it’s possible to just entirely forget about it for 5 years so important not to rule it out!
