I was looking for a longer term contraceptive that would allow me to continue ovulating, but perhaps make my periods lighter. The Mirena did both. I know I did spot for a bit when I first got it but can’t remember how long that was (this was over five years ago). I have continued to ovulate mostly on a monthly basis, as confirmed by bloodwork, ProOve test strips, and temping for a number of cycles. I really had no other side effects that were noticeable to me. I am about to have it removed as it’s been over five years and my cycles have been a little short recently – I strongly suspect perimenopause (I’m 46) rather than an IUD side effect, but I am taking the IUD out to see. Will update if my cycles do become longer. Also, it is really important to monitor your *ovulation* not just whether you bleed or not. Continued ovulation is good for bone density and other health parameters, which is why I chose this method.
