Experience

I had the Mirena fitted in early March 2020 and had it removed mid June 2020. The fitting itself was fine, I think I’d read too many negative reviews online and almost psyched myself up for “the worst pain on earth” but it wasn’t too bad at all. 3 sharp period cramps and the discomfort of the speculum, it was over in a 1 minute (I haven’t had children either) so if you’re worrying about the pain, please don’t I’m sure you’ll be fine. The 24hrs afterwards however were pretty awful for me, horrendous contractions, sciatic back pain, nausea, diarrhoea, intense vaginal pain, fever, sweating and generally curled up in a ball feeling like I’d made a huge mistake. Sure enough it did pass, and I was feeling a lot better albeit groggy the following morning. The cramping was on and off for about a month (noticed more after exercise or sex) but for me personally, my sciatic back pain never really left, it always popped up intermittently (which worried me as I’d never had sciatic pain before). I started my period 3 days after the insertion, and it lasted about 10 days and I didn’t have a period at all after this (only some intermittent light spotting which didn’t need a pad, only noticed it when going to the loo), which was a big positive. About 2 months I developed more symptoms – my skin & hair began to change drastically, I became incredibly oily (as in washed my hair, dried it to find it STILL oily), I developed tiny uniform bumps & spots in my hair line & forehead (which was later diagnosed as Malassezia Folliculitis – “fungal acne” which can arise after hormonal changes & stress), which a course of anti fungal cream, pills & shampoo helped to clear. The oily hair got a bit better but I still have to wash it everyday (previously I washed every 2 days) and I’ve noticed my pillow “smells” after the second day so washing my bed linen more frequently. My general body odour is more strong – so I have to shower every day now, whereas before every 2 days was fine. By the end of the 2nd month I’d noticed a pattern of a stabbing pain in my side, which I’m certain was an ovarian cyst (I have PCOS and have been in hospital twice with ruptured cysts). I was quite disappointed to read in the booklet I was given by the nurse that the Mirena coil can increase your chances of developing ovarian cysts, why had no one thought to check my medical history ON SCREEN in front of them and not bothered to mention this? I had noticed an on / off thrush infection which didn’t clear either – it was the last straw, I had it removed last week and back on Yasmin Pill. No periods was great but my god not worth the other symptoms, hoping to feel back to normal in the next month or so. Avoid if you have PCOS / problems with androgens / ovarian cysts.
