Experience

I found that, despite being nervous, the coil insertion was fine because my clinic offered me good pain relief (an injection in my uterus, rather than just a numbing gel or nothing at all). Initially, I experienced medium bleeding on and off for the first six months of the Mirena. I also experienced some cramps, as well as tender and enlarged breasts on three separate occasions. During those first six months I also had very occasional mood swings, or times of feeling more emotional than usual (and I did not have these mood swings during my monthly cycle before getting the coil). None of the above had a significant effect on my life, and these side effects all tailed off from around six months onwards. From around nine months onwards I stopped having a period, which has been very convenient. I have not had any changes to my skin, my hair or my weight. One side effect I found difficult was that the hormonal changes prompted by the Mirena coil caused me to have cold sores either once or twice every month. Before the coil, I would only get a cold sore around once a year, after I had been ill. This side effect alone made me consider getting the Mirena removed and replaced with the copper coil. However, my GP urged me to try aciclovir medication for my cold sores first and, since starting that, I have not had a single one. In conclusion, I am very happy with the Mirena coil. I was prepared for the first six months of side effects, and my body has settled down since then. I do not feel that my body is being ruled by a foreign object or pumped full of hormones; I just feel like my normal self. Not having to worry about contraception for five years is a huge benefit, and I know that the Mirena is reliable enough that I can feel at ease about not being pregnant. I am also delighted to no longer have to deal with a period each month.
