Experience

The Mirena Coil caused an almost total loss of libido in me, and also caused significant vaginal dryness that left sex very painful. I had to be treated with numbing cream and could barely cope with a smear test, and certainly no tampons were used during that time. I barely had sex at all during the last 18 months of the three years I had it in. It also caused poor mood, and seems to have affected my memory – the time I had it in seems almost a total blur. The symptoms crept up on me slowly and it took quite some time for me to realise what was going on. When it was taken out, I was just about back to normal in about 3 months. Positively, it didn’t negatively impact my periods – I think it made them marginally lighter. I gained weight whilst using it but can’t categorically say this was due to the Mirena. However, this was one of the worst things I’ve ever done to my body and my mind, and it took some time for me to recover once it was taken out. If you are sensitive to hormones I would advise extreme caution.
