Throughout my teenage years my periods worsened to such an extent that I would be doubled up in pain on the first day of menstruation, and would faint if I were to stand for more than 15 minutes on days one-three. This was hugely affecting my confidence and I reached a point where I was beginning to accept that I wasn’t going to be able to cope in my chosen career (as a doctor). In my penultimate year at medical school we had a lecture on contraceptive options; this was the first time I had actually learnt about the options out there. At British schools the education focus is on not getting pregnant, so lessons go no further than condoms. I went to my GP and requested the IUS as a means to reduce the severity of my periods – the most frustrating part was that I had been seeing them for months for my troublesome symptoms and it was only through my own incidental education that this was proposed. The first few weeks-month with Mirena involved abdominal cramping and some spotting. Since then I have had no negative side effects, and have escaped my problematic menstruation. The only thing I dread now is having to come off it if I were to ever want to become pregnant!
