Trying to get the Mirena coil fitted was quite a lot of effort, expected to be about 6 weeks after I asked my GP for advice, though I kept calling in and eventually got booked into an appointment. Got it fitted at the Chalmers Sexual Health Clinic in Edinburgh, where the staff are all very nice. There was the GP, a trainee GP, and a kind male nurse in the room with me. Had a chat with the GP and she initially tested me for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. The speculum and the pokey around instruments were slightly uncomfortable but not very painful. I initially tried it without any anaesthetic but after about 2 minutes she saw my cervix was very unhappy about being fiddled with so she injected locally. She really struggled getting the coil in – it took about 40 minutes and she nearly gave up with us both sweating! However she continued and got it in. Then however my womb was very unhappy and I got so many cramps! For about half an hour I couldn’t walk and could imagine how people have been sick with the contractions that were happening. There was some pain for the rest of the day, like period cramps. In the ~8 weeks after the threads hanging out of my cervix still weren’t softened, and my boyfriend could feel it at the end of his penis during sex. It softened soon enough though. In terms of periods, they lightened almost immediately, and now 2 years later they’ve stopped altogether – I get a tiny bit of spotting every 4 weeks. My moods got worse around my periods on the coil, but now they’ve subsided. My skin also has been affected – my acne got slightly worse. I can never feel the coil, and I didn’t get many cramps before but really don’t get any now. I’m really satisfied with it – I don’t have to think about something on a daily basis and I can pretend it isn’t there. Really glad of the almost sterilisation level of protection of contraception. I would recommend this product based on my experience.
