My periods went from 3-4 days to 7-10, I would have to take medication to make my periods less heavy, with it I would have to change a tampon every 2 hours, if I forgot to take it I would bleed through in 30mins. Pain would last the week prior to the period and the week after. It would spread down my upper thigh, back and womb area. Sometimes it would be so bad I would have to take the day off. Getting the iud put in was absolute agony, worst cramps of my life, I would advise asking for codeine and making sure you have the rest of the day free if you decide to get one put in. Mentally I don’t think the coil had a direct effect, but all the side effects – pain, out of control bleeding definitely brought my mood very low. I gained weight, again not directly down to the iud but because of the side effects. Heavy bleeding stopped me going to the gym and on the weeks I had no period I would get cramps very easily. I also found the negative effect it had on my mood also led me to seeking comfort in food. I really wouldn’t recommend this!
