Experience

The copper coil was good as I didn’t need to think about it or remember to take it everyday like the pill. So there were never any panics/emergency pregnancy test taking. The one I had the nurse said I could leave it there for 5 yrs so that was very convenient plus for me. However it did give me incredibly awful period cramps, worse than normal when I was on no contraception; and my periods were noticeably longer and very heavy (~8 days with somedays needing to change tampon every hr). This ultimately caused me to change to the hormonal coil, with which (after ~6 months of spotting) I have now been period free now for 4 yrs. I do know effects vary between women, each girl may have different results with the different forms of coil.

Experience after taking

I changed directly from the copper coil to the hormonal coil. I won’t lie it’s not pain-free having the coils removed and reimplanted, I would describe it as “highly uncomfortable” and I would recommend that you heed their advice and take the ibuprofen and paracetamol recommendation an hour before your appointment and then take the rest of the day off work. I did not do this and regretted it.
