Insertion was extremely painful, the worst pain I have ever experienced, the ibuprofen I had taken beforehand did not help. The doctor inserting my coil was lovely and very experienced in coil fittings so it was relatively quick. I couldn’t stand afterwards because I was faint and dizzy, and had to lay down in an empty doctor’s room. I experienced severe cramping after insertion and struggled to sleep for several hours (the fitting was done at 7:30pm – I would recommend getting it done later in the day as this meant I could just go to bed after). Now, 9 months on, I have painful and very heavy periods, with premenstrual cramps starting approximately a week before my period begins. I switched straight from the combined pill to the IUD so I thought this change would happen. My periods were pretty regular from the outset which surprised me, as prior to taking the pill they had been fairly irregular (though I went on the pill relatively soon after starting my periods so I don’t know what my body’s natural cycle would be like now). I have less vaginal dryness than when on the pill, higher libido and it does feel to me like my mood has improved slightly but the PMS is as bad as it was on the pill, which was one of the main reasons for me wanting to come off hormonal contraception.
