I had previously tried the pill, the implant and the injections for many years and had awful experiences with each (mood changes, anxiety, depression, lack of sex drive, vaginal dryness and most annoyingly irregular bleeding and spotting). Honestly, for me the copper IUD felt like a breath of fresh air after all of that. There was some pain of getting the coil inserted, but it was more uncomfortable really and I’d say it was just a little more painful than a smear test. I also expected this and I was really lucky that I had an amazing nurse at my local sexual health clinic who made me feel more comfortable. I took painkillers but there was some cramp pain immediately after and for the following couple of days with some light bleeding. Honestly, I was kind of happy to have it put in and to be off the pill so these side effects of it being put in were ok in my mind.
I’ve now had the copper IUD in for 2 and half years and positives include having a great sex drive, no vaginal dryness, knowing my cycles and having ‘normal’ periods. Negatives include slightly heavier periods and more cramps before, during and after my periods than I remember from when I was 15 (pre contraception) although it’s hard to know what normal is like for me now. I’ve heard others have it far worse than me though and everybody is different of course. My periods aren’t that heavy that I have to change sanitary products super regularly. Another negative to mention is I get painful bloating around my period which I never used to have. Lastly, one thing to add is that sometimes I find sex can be a bit uncomfortable (at some times in my cycle where my cervix is lower) because of the coil. However, I would take these side effects over the vast list of what I experienced on previous contraception.
