A year in with my copper IUD and I’m really pleased with it. I got a copper IUD after having to come off hormonal birth control due to a blood clot. My insertion was mostly painless (I got a numbing shot in the cervix, which sounds terrible but wasn’t bad and I would ask for it if you can!). I had bad cramps a few hours after the insertion but rested in bed and took some painmeds and didn’t really have any issues with it beyond a bit of bleeding for a few days. My periods were more crampy and longer (4-5 days instead of my normal 3ish) for the first 3 cycles post insertion but after that, they’ve mostly returned to what I consider normal. I have a little bit of cramping before my period but not unmanageable. Overall I really like the copper IUD and I’m really grateful that it seems compatible with my body.
