I had the copper coil fitter after a pregnancy scare. I’m 35 with 3 children and this method was supposed to have the highest success rate with no hormones, which can’t use. Having it inserted was painful but I’ve had children so it wasn’t the end of the world. I experienced contractions to the point I couldn’t walk 150m with my children that day. My cycle length became shorter, 25 days (from 31) and I would bleed for 2-3 weeks of those, heavily. I became anaemic. I suffered incredible mental impairment as though I was mentally ill with a short fuse and stress which was out or character completely and started 2 weeks after it was inserted. I was assured that the negative side effects would ease in three months and to call then if they persisted. I’m my third month, the pain in my back was so bad I was prescribed codeine. I was desperate to get it out and was awaiting my next period when It would be less painful to remove but the pain stopped and my sanity returned. I thought it had finally settled down like they’d said it would. 3 weeks later when my period did not show, I realised I couldn’t feel my strings and after 2 weeks of hospital admissions, they found I was pregnant, that the coil had not migrated and most likely had fallen out. This was devastating. If you have any problems with this form of contraception, get it checked as a matter of urgency to check it is in properly. I now feel my body was trying to reject it and that it was lodged much lower than it was supposed to be from very early on. Don’t wait. I wasn’t offered a check up even though within 5 minutes of having it inserted I complained I could feel it a tremendous amount. The last thing you or anyone wants is to become pregnant when you are on contraception and have no idea that that can happen. Since this has happened, I have heard from staff at the hospital and my midwife that it’s very common, so listen to your gut, I wasn’t given that impression at all at the doctors office. An utter nightmare from beginning to end.

Experience after taking

My physical and mental health resumed immediately from when my pregnancy is dated back to. The side effects were debilitating and life changing. I only wish I had known it could and indeed had fallen out.
