The Paragard copper IUD has been the best contraceptive choice I have ever made. I had my first one fitted at 18 and I am currently on my second one – I have never given birth. In the first month of the IUD being in the womb, I experienced a little discomfort during exercise – this went away completely. The process of inserting the IUD is very similar to getting a Pap smear. If you are concerned about it, try getting a Pap smear first (you should be doing this anyway!). The process of inserting the IUD takes less than five minutes – the speculum felt normal and the tenaculum was uncomfortable. The sounding (checking the depth of the uterus) process was also uncomfortable but neither the tenaculum nor the sound were awful or unbearable, just uncomfortable. The insertion of the IUD felt comparable to the sound, but was faster. I had lightheadedness due to a drop in blood pressure following the insertion, but after resting in another room in the clinic for fifteen minutes, I was more than well enough to leave and continue with my day. For ten years of excellent protection, the procedure is an absolute no-brainer. Until I’m ready to conceive, it’s the paragard for me!
