Experience

I used the copper IUD as it does not use any hormones – the coil inserted releases copper which helps to prevent the sperm from fertilising the egg. After previous terrible experiences with the pill having a contraception that did not affect my mood, skin or period regularity was incredible. However the insertion was very painful and I did faint for the first time ever after having it inserted. A year went on and I was so pleased with it – the only side affect was a slightly more painful and heavy period. However just after the first year, I missed a period and unfortunately the IUD had failed and I was pregnant. This does happen to 1% of women in the first year who have the copper IUD inserted. I wish I had been told that this was not the most effective contraceptive out there and I just want to spread awareness of this statistic fact.
