Having ongoing issues with mental health including eating disorders, and taking a raft of medications for bipolar etc, I wanted to try a ‘neutral’ non-hormonal contraceptive, having had a negative experience with Microgynon 30 which I felt adversely affected my moods. Copper coil pros: lighter periods after a few months; unlikely to dislodge itself; doesn’t alter your natural hormonal baseline (though whatever that is might not be great, lol); no maintenance other than theoretically checking it’s still there; lasts for about 10yrs. Copper coil cons: does nothing to regulate periods, mine are still erratic; and I have noticed that if you have rather, ummmmm, vigorous sex or sex with an especially well endowed gentleman it seems to jiggle it about and can cause a bit of light bleeding, nothing scary though. User tip: do NOT let a trainee install yours, I did, and it was slow and horrible. She had to get a senior doctor to come help after rummaging about unsuccessfully for what seemed like forever! Ask for the numbing spray (I didn’t) and try and get someone who’s done it many times, then it’s totally fine. I did feel a bit weird and ouchy for a couple of days after but didn’t stop me going to work. Recommended!
