I got my first coil over 22 years ago as a child free woman and haven’t looked back since. The first time the GP tried to put it in I levitated off the bed in pain, so we couldn’t do it. Then a friend got me on to a more holistic GP who has acupuncture skills. She put some needles in my feet (some for my cervix and some as a temporary valium) and after leaving me for a bit came back and got it in no problems. Did it hurt for a few days after? Yes! Cramping, bleeding etc. But after not that long it subsided and the roller coaster hormonal hell of the pill, injection, and mini pill was over. I had to have it replaced a couple of times and have found in the absence of acupuncture a large amount of vodka drunk in time does the trick. I’ve explained my pain management strategy to nurses and they haven’t batted an eyelid. Afterwards there’s cramping and pain and bleeding. But so, so, so worth it.
