I had the copper coil fitted after 3 months without contraception (not sexually active over the 3 months). I had previously had the combined pill (Gederel 30/150, and Lizenna) however these caused me massive emotional side effects. I was happy to find a non-hormonal long lasting method of contraception.
I had the coil inserted by a Nurse practitioner at my GP which was very convenient and easy to make the appointment. It required some swabs to ensure I did not have any ongoing uro/gynae infections.
I was not told to take any ibuprofen/ paracetamol before the insertion until I was laid on the table ready to have the coil inserted. Taking them about an hour before insertion would have been better.
When the coil was inserted it was instantly painful. It felt like I had been punched in the womb, and was worse than any period cramps I’d ever had. It was not touched by pain relief and I was glad I had nothing going on the next few days as I took me three days to recover from the pain. I spent the majority of those days curled up with a hot water bottle to try and make the pain go away.
Once this had resolved the coil was great till it wasn’t. I didn’t get pregnant which is a plus. My period were heavier and more painful, however it was generally okay.
Around six months after insertion the coil started to become incredibly painful – not around the womb area but lower down. It was like a scraping stabbing pain that never really went away. When I tried to get a GP/ Nurse appointment I was ignored by everyone I saw, and eventually I ended up demanding the Nurse took the coil out. When she did remove it she said I had expelled it into my os – top of the cervix. On the plus side as soon as it was out the pain went.
I do have friends who have had completely different and positive experiences with the copper coil, however I unfortunately am not one of them.
