Experience

Not what it first seemed… I used Marvelon for approx. 6 years. During this time I had no problems. No hormonal highs or lows (Unlike Microgynon) and lighter periods – I thought it was a wonder pill! However, 1 year after taking the pill i developed Ulcerative Colitis. For 5 years I was constantly ill. No medication worked. The consultant couldn’t help and kept sending me for different tests. I felt ill for long periods of time. I decided to stop taking the pill as I was in a long term relationship and no longer needed the protection. After 2 months my colitis had calmed down. And 3 years later, I am still in remission. I 100% believe the pill exacerbated my colitis, even though I would be unable to prove this. I may have been predisposed to developing colitis but if it happens to you, definitely get it checked out and mention the contraception you are using to your doctor.

Experience after taking

For the first few months, I would feel very hormonal/emotional the day before my period which didn’t happen when I was on the pill. However, I am now back to normal and feel very balanced emotionally. My periods are heavier and more painful again. So that’s a downside of being off the pill.
