Experience

I went on Marvelon when I was 13. This was mainly due to painful periods and acne. After a few years and pill shortages I was put on Gedarel. Up until the age of about 26 I was happy on the pill. It worked well for me and I felt in control of my periods. However from this point I noticed that my sex drive had pretty much gone, I was getting more and more period pains every month and basically felt like the pill wasn’t really working for me any more. After speaking to my doctor I decided to come off the pill for 6 months to see how I felt and if I noticed any changes. Within days my skin and hair became incredibly oily. This continued to get worse and the acne I had as a teenager was back with a vengeance! My periods also did not return. After about 7/8 months I got in contact with my doctor. I was sent for blood tests which didn’t show anything and then scans. For the next year I was passed around from doctor to doctor who had no idea why my periods hadn’t returned. Eventually I was told I had Polycystic ovaries but as my BMI was low (healthy but on the low side) my only options were to go back on the pill or try for a baby. Another year down the line and thankfully my periods have returned. My PMS however is awful and recently my cycle has been quite irregular. I refuse to take the pill again and I’m gutted that no one could offer me more support or advice, nor was I ever told as a teenager or young women how the pill can mask problems. I’m hoping to try for a baby this year but have absolutely no idea how or if my body is able to do this. I wish there was more support on the NHS for women and I wish I knew more about how my body works each month!
