Experience

I was on Levlen for a number of years in my teens (about 16-22). I found it a bit difficult to remember to take it every day at the same time, especially if I was going through a dry spell and wasn’t worried about falling pregnant. It was handy that I was able to have some control over my period, e.g. skipping my period when going away for a weekend or if I had a bit sports competition and I didn’t want my period that week. To begin with it was fine, no changes to mood or anything and my periods were relatively regular. After a few years though, I started noticing changes. Every month for the same 6 days I was getting super anxious and depressed, almost to the point of panic. My boyfriend mentioned it to me and suggested that it might be the hormones because it was so out of character for me. I went back to my doctor and they said that this was common feedback – after about 4 years funny side effects can start happening.

Experience after taking

I went straight from the pill to the Implanon, so I’m not 100% sure what it would have been like if I had gotten off contraception altogether.
